The Environment and OH&S

Cleaner Production

OH&S

We are very proud of our environmental achievements at Focus Press. Over the past 10 years, we have introduced or developed a number of programs to lower the impact of our business on the environment. These include:

  • Completely replacing oil based inks with Soya based inks for all our production.
  • Introducing the use of micro-dot technology to the printing process.
  • Eliminating volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) from the printing process.
  • Managing the printing process more assertively to cut down on paper wastage.
  • Recycling chemicals utilised in the plate making process.
  • Reducing landfill waste by 90%
  • Managing our raw materials to reduce waste

Being ecologically responsible is part of our business principals. We limit our impact on the environment by using Soya based inks which are more economical to run on the press, reduce pollution and deliver higher quality print collateral.

Our manufacturing procedures are also designed to eliminate many harmful chemicals from the process, thus reducing Volatile Organic Compound’s (VOC’s) and toxic waste.

Planning how we manage your work is very important to us. A well planned process means substantially less paper is used, thus saving valuable natural resources such as paper and trees, while we deliver the collateral you expect at a quality standard that exceeds your expectations.

Not only have we been extremely successful in our endeavours to reduce our impact on the environment, our efforts have been recognised by State and Federal Governments, the Environmental Protection Authority, numerous media groups and SAI Global who have issued Focus Press with its 14001 Certification for Environmental Management Systems.

From your perspective, you can take heart that by using Focus Press for your printing, you and your organisation are making a very real commitment to the environment and to environmentally friendly practices. Your work is printed using Soya based inks and the microdot print method, making it the cleanest, highest quality and most cost effective, environmentally friendly collateral it is possible to produce.

Cleaner Production

Focus Press is constantly initiating programs to achieve cleaner production.

All our staff are committed to achieving ever higher Cleaner Production standards including managing and conserving the use of raw materials and energy, reducing or eliminating toxic waste from the production process and reducing waste, landfill and toxic emissions.

Incorporating environmentally friendly alternatives into the way we operate our business, such as Computer to Plate (CTP) and FTP technology – the fast protocol for transferring files via the internet or secure file transfer link, also assists the environment and our initiative of achieving even Cleaner Production.

By implementing a Cleaner Production philosophy at Focus Press, our aim is to improve the standard of our work, offer a clean printing alternative to our clients and be recognised as one of the most environmentally responsible printing companies in the world.

We have achieved some amazing results, some of which resulted in one industry publication recognising Focus Press as "the most ecologically responsible printing company in Australia." Print 21, October 2003.

OH&S

The holistic approach to business means looking at all aspects of the operation and integrating standards that meet or exceed the expectations of all stakeholders. In the Focus Press’ example, this means considering the needs and expectations of our customers, our staff, our owners, the industry and the community.

Having already achieved certification for our quality assurance (ISO 9001) and environmental management system (ISO 14001), our next goal is to finalise and integrate our occupational health and safety certification into our bank of achievements.

While OH&S is usually viewed from a legal perspective, Focus Press has taken the view that to maintain our position as an industry leader, our OH&S program needs to be all encompassing; with well developed processes and outcomes with which all staff can relate and feel included.

Our OH&S committee, which includes representatives from all aspects of our business, use their experience to develop high awareness programs with long term benefits to the company.

High on our list is our duty of care to everyone involved with our business. As a direct result of making this a priority, we have created a better and safer working environment for our staff, while our customers benefit from the cost savings resulting from a highly motivated and customer focused workforce.
